Timor-Leste is located in a tropical region with distinct wet and dry seasons, offering ideal conditions for the growth of fast-growing tree species—particularly during the wet season. Its mountainous terrain creates microclimates and diverse ecological niches, supporting a variety of forest types, including montane and lowland tropical forests.

The island forms part of the Wallacea biogeographical region, renowned for its unique mix of Asian and Australasian species. This makes reforestation efforts in Timor-Leste not only critical for climate impact, but also for biodiversity conservation. These environmental conditions make the region a strategically important carbon sink in the global fight against climate change.

However, deforestation in Timor-Leste remains a serious issue. During the 24-year Indonesian occupation (1975–1999), woodlands were intentionally devastated: large areas were burned to deprive resistance fighters of cover, chemical defoliants were deployed, and unsustainable commercial logging - often backed by military interests - exploited the forests without regard for local communities or environmental impact.
